Journey with Alex Soh... Day 12 & 13: Zhangjiajie

Posted on Nov 10, 2009 in Journey with Alex Soh

Being in a prefecture that boasts of housing China's first national forest park, I decided that I have no time to waste. Having spent the day before catching up on lost sleep and just recharging, I was determined to make the most of the remaining time in Zhangjiajie (???) checking out its scenic attractions, among which is the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.

One of the main reasons I decided on taking this one-month solo trip to China, as hard as it is to be away from my family, is that I want to experience life as adventurously as I possibly can, while I still have the energy, the mental and physical health and the grit to take on whatever comes my way. So it is that my adventurous spirit got the better of me at the park and, despite the pain that I experienced on my second night in China, I decided to ditch the cable car that brought me up to the mountain peak and make my descent by foot. Bad idea!! Cue the return of the bugging pain in my left foot.

Left without much choice, I put a halt to my sightseeing plans and headed towards town to find a Chinese doctor. Another acupuncture treatment. This time, I counted nine needles on me, instead of six the last time. That's not all - the doctor prescribed some medicinal herbs for me and instructed me to brew them for two hours before drinking. Okay, I thought, if it helps relieve the pain, what's two hours, right? It'll be over in a flash and I'll be up and running again! Apparently I was wrong. The medicine came in not one, but 15 packs to last me for five days!! As stunned as I was, it really didn't look like I had any options, except to go along with the doctor's instructions :( oh well. The doctor then scheduled another round of acupuncture treatment for me the next day, after my return visit to the National Forest Park.

Apart from the pain, my stay in Zhangjiajie has been pretty good - even drinking the medicinal brew was an experience! I will be leaving for Guilin tomorrow night, so look out for my next update soon!
