Journey with Alex Soh... Day Eight: Chengdu

Posted on Nov 09, 2009 in Journey with Alex Soh

After spending a few days surrounded by the captivating beauty of Jiuzhaigou, I've packed up my bag, said my goodbyes to new-found friends and made my way for my next destination: Chengdu. A little sad to leave but there's so much more to see on this trip. I'll let the photos speak for themselves!

Spent the morning making my way around Chengdu, just taking in the sights, the local life and the interesting people along the way. Capturing the lives of these people; making friends. One of the common fears when taking photos of strangers is that they might get annoyed by the presence of a big camera, somewhat like an invasion of their personal space. And the truth is, people often do find that annoying.

But if you take your time to talk to each and every one of them, making real effort to get to know them and to make them happy and comfortable with you, you will find that icy front melting away. On the other hand, if you allow yourself to be afraid and choose to walk away from them, they end up getting even more annoyed!

So don't let this fear cripple your creativity - stay and make friends. Capture with your heart.

To me, this is one of the best parts of photography trips, where people you meet become more than just a passing face. Through these conversations I have with them, and the resulting photos that I have of them, they leave their imprints, big or small, in my life and I hope, mine in theirs.
