Nelson Tan's Lightweight Siam Reap Photo Adventure

Posted on May 02, 2013 in Events & Community, Lowepro

Photographer Nelson Tan recently returned from a trip to Siam Reap, Cambodia and shared his experience about travelling lightweight for a photography trip.

“The weather in Cambodia at this time of the year can only be described as scorching hot. The temperature hits 40 degrees Celsius by early noon, and the heat saps away your energy every minute you stay in the sun. It is difficult to capture good photos when you are tired, so the strategy was to travel light in Cambodia,” said Nelson.

To keep the weight down, Nelson brought along a Fuji XE-1 with 4 lenses instead of his usual repertoire of a DSLR set. The lightweight and compact gear was packed into a Lowepro Nova 4 AW camera bag for the trip.

Nelson explained his choice, “I spent half the time exploring the Angkor Wat and surrounding temples, and there was a fair bit of climbing and exploration over rocky surfaces.

"I wanted a bag that had great protection for my gear in case it goes tumbling over some rocks, and the Lowepro was great in that respect. It is compact but had space for my gear, wallet, phone and water. And just as importantly, it kept the dust and sand out of my gear!”

Researching online about the Angkor Wat temples, Nelson realized that he needed a tripod for the shaded areas, but he wasn’t keen to bring along a full-sized tripod as it would hamper his mobility. He opted to bring along the Joby Gorillapod SLR-Zoom which he clipped onto his Lowepro Nova 4.

“The Gorillapod SLR-Zoom with the ballhead is absolutely fabulous! It weighs less than a lens, and I could position it anyway on the rocks to get great depth of field by stopping down without worrying about slow shutter speeds.

"The Joby ballhead is rated for a DSLR, so it holds my Fuji XE-1 without any issue. Several of my images would not have been possible without the Joby Gorillapod SLR-Zoom!” said Nelson.
