Tokina AT-X 165 PRO DX Its Speed And Versatility Make It A Winner
If you have a DX format digital SLR and want the convenience of working with just one lens, the Tokina AT-X 165 PRO DX is an optic you should take a really good look at.
The new Tokina AT-X 165 PRO DX makes an excellent standard lens giving the digital photographer the equivalent of a 24-75 mm lens in terms of film. This gives an impressive wide angle that can capture sweeping landscapes or show a subject within its environment. At the other end of the scale, the 75 mm equivalent gives a moderate telephoto effect suitable for portraits and the longer working distance it offers makes it possible to approach small creatures with less likelihood of your spooking them.
The AT-X 165’s bright F/2.8 constant aperture will prove a boon to the nature enthusiast, portrait artist or photojournalist. Images in the viewfinder will be bright and clear and because it shows a shallower depth of field, subjects in the viewfinder will snap in and out of focus clearly. This wide aperture allows for faster shutter speeds in low-light conditions or a more shallow depth of field to throw the background out of focus for more pleasing portraits and close-up studies. The out-of-focus background from a wide aperture setting concentrates attention on the subject, giving the photo more strength and intimacy.
Tokina’s exclusive One-Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism allows the photographer to switch between auto focus and manual focus very easily. There is no need to take the camera off your eye. Simply snapping the focus ring forward engages the auto focus mechanism and to focus manually, just pull the focus ring back towards the camera. There is no need to change the AF-MF switch on Nikon cameras* and there is no second AF/MF switch on the lens for Canon, everything is accomplished by the focus ring.
You can tell from its heft and solid build that this is a high-quality optic. Fit and finish is excellent and all movements are smooth and silky without any trace of sloppiness. The AT-X 165 PRO’s optical construction features 15 elements in 12 groups. One SD (Super-Low Dispersion) glass element is included in the rear optical group of the lens to reduce the number of elements (pieces of glass) in the optical design in order to make the lens more compact and lightweight, as well as give it a faster focusing. It uses a nine-blade diaphragm which gives more natural-looking out-of-focus highlights.
The front element of the AT-X 165 PRO DX has a newly formulated WP or “Water Proof” optical coating on the glass. This new coating makes marks such as spots left by water or finger-prints much easier to clean than standard multi-coating**.
If you own any Canon EOS or Nikon-D model cameras, you’re in luck as the Tokina AT-X 165 PRO DX has mounts that fit these cameras.
*The lens does not work in AF mode when mounted on Nikon D40 or D40X SLR body.
** Please note that the WP coating does not make the lens itself waterproof or water-resistant.
