Tokina ATX-116 PRO DX
Very Wide and Very Fast

The majority of digital SLRs use imaging sensors that are two-thirds the size of regular 35mm SLRs which are known as APS-C sized sensors. The result is that 35mm SLR lenses attached to many digital SLRs will have a magnification increase of 50%. This can be a bonus for users of telephoto lenses, for when used on these digital SLRs, the teles perform like they are 50% longer without any loss in speed as you would if you used a tele-extender.

The flip side of the coin however, is that the wide angles become a lot less wide. Thus a dramatic super-wide 21mm for a 35mm SLR becomes equivalent to a pretty ordinary 30mm when it’s used on a digital SLR. There was a dearth of wide-angle lenses for digital SLRs with APS-C sized sensors and photographers who needed their wide expansive views for landscapes and interiors lamented their unavailability.

It’s no wonder then that many keen wide-angle users have enthusiastically welcomed Tokina’s release of their ATX-116 Pro DX in the market. As an 11-16mm zoom, it has a modest zoom range, but at its widest, it has it has an impressive 104-degree angle of view and at its 16mm limit, this narrows down to 82 degrees.

This is a lens that can capture the vast grandeur of magnificent landscapes or the impressive interiors of large buildings. Its wide angle capability also makes it eminently suitable for working real close in crowds, for example, and its wide f2.8 aperture makes it fast enough to capture images even in very low light while its minimum aperture of f22 gives it tremendous depth of field.

Tokina’s exclusive One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism allows the photographer to switch between AF and MF simply by snapping the focus ring forward for AF and back toward the camera to focus manually. There is no need to change the AF-MF switch on Nikon cameras* and there is no second AF/MF switch on the lens for Canon, everything is accomplished by the focus ring.

As a lens in Tokina’s ATX Pro range, you can be assured that this is a top-quality product. It has 13 elements in 11 groups with multi-layer coatings to reduce flare and improve light transmission. Barrel length is always constant as it has internal focusing with a minimum focusing distance of 0.3m and its nine aperture blades give more natural looking specular highlights.

You’ll get an impressively wider and more exciting view of the world with this Tokina ATX-116 Pro DX on your Canon or Nikon digital SLR.

* The lens does not work in AF mode when mounted on Nikon D40 or D40X SLR body.
