Lightweight and Compact 50mm F1.4 G MasterTM Prime

Sony’s latest lens technology delivers extraordinary resolution and bokeh in a compact, lightweight lens. Extraordinary AF, smooth operability, and rugged reliability add the finishing touches to this innovative large-aperture standard prime lens.

Breathtaking G Master Quality Right Out to the Image Edges

Two high-precision XA (extreme aspherical) lens elements effectively correct distortion and most types of aberration. This new optical design also employs an ED (extra-low dispersion) glass element to suppress chromatic aberration. And with our original Nano AR Coating II on lens surfaces, internal reflections that can cause flare and ghosting are dramatically reduced.

Innovative Optics and an F1.4 Aperture Deliver Magnificent Bokeh

Innovative optics and an F1.4 maximum aperture combine to deliver magnificent bokeh. Deep, creamy background and foreground bokeh at F1.4 are ideal for making portrait subjects stand out from their surroundings. Advanced features that contribute to superb bokeh quality include XA (extreme aspherical) elements that effectively prevent onion-ring bokeh, and careful optimisation of spherical aberration during design and manufacture.

A Lightweight and Compact Lens with Incredible Performance

XA (extreme aspherical) elements precisely positioned in an innovative design, high-thrust XD linear motors, and the latest compact circular aperture unit work together in a large-aperture high-resolution lens that is only 80.6mm in outer diameter and 96.0mm in length while weighing just 516 grams. A unique blend of mobility and low-light performance make it an ideal choice for everything from portraits to snapshots.

Fast, Precise, Quiet AF and Tracking for Stills and Movies

The lens’s focus group is driven by our high-thrust XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors and an advanced control algorithm for smooth, responsive focus drive. Noise and vibration are minimised for refined, quiet AF operation that can be a huge advantage when shooting movies. Movie subjects are smoothly captured and tracked even when shooting at 120 fps or other high frame rates.

Intuitive Operation Gets the Creator's Vision Across

Linear Response MF provides manual focusing response that rivals mechanical lenses, and is more than responsive enough to produce smooth rack focus for movies. An iris lock switch can be locked so that the aperture ring can be fixed at the “A” position to prevent unwanted changes, or manually set from F1.4 to F16. Customisable two focus hold buttons and an AF/MF focus mode switch provide extra shooting versatility.

Outstanding Reliability for any Environment and Application

The front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels fingerprints, dust, water, oil, and other contaminants while making it easier to wipe off any contaminants that do become attached to the lens surface. A dust and moisture resistant design1 provides extra reliability for outdoor use in challenging conditions.

Nano AR Coating II for Outstanding Clarity

Sony’s original Nano AR Coating II process produces a thin, uniform coating on lens surfaces, dramatically reducing internal reflections that can cause flare and ghosting. Excellent contrast and clarity are achieved even when the sun or other strong light sources are within the frame.

Get Close for Eye-Opening Detail

Minimum focusing distance is 0.41 meters and maximum magnification is 0.16x when AF is used (0.38 meters and 0.18x for MF), providing extra flexibility for shooting stills and movies. XA (extreme aspherical) lens elements maintain sharpness at any focusing distance, while smooth, deep bokeh at F1.4 separates the subject from the background.

Intuitive Manual Focus Control

Linear Response MF ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually. Focus ring rotation immediately produces a corresponding change in focus, similar to the response of a mechanical focus system. Precise, intuitive control directly translates your creative ideas to impressive imagery.

Independent Aperture Ring

An aperture ring with a click ON/OFF switch offers direct, hands-on aperture control. An iris lock switch can be locked so that the aperture ring is either fixed at the “A” position, or can be manually set from F1.4 to F16. When unlocked the aperture ring can be seamlessly moved between all settings.

Customisable Focus Hold Button and More for Advanced Control

Focus hold buttons and a focus mode switch provide extra shooting versatility. Customisable focus hold buttons in two locations can be assigned other functions from the body menus to match shooting needs. For example, the Focus Magnifier function could be assigned to these buttons so that it is available for quick focus checks while shooting.

Compatible with 67mm Filters

This lens accepts standard 67mm screw-on filters. Thanks to its internal focus system the front element does not rotate while focusing, facilitating the use of circular polarizing filters for landscape photography or variable ND filters for movies. The FE 24mm F1.4 GM and FE 35mm F1.4 GM lenses are also threaded for 67 mm filters, so filters can be shared.

Fluorine Front Element Coating

The front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels fingerprints, dust, water, oil, and other contaminants, while making it easier to wipe off any contaminants that do become attached to the lens surface.

Lens Configuration

G Master series lenses take imaging and expression to previously unattainable levels with a stunning blend of extremely high resolution and softly dissolving background bokeh.
